Flash-based data storage that prioritizes speed, reliability, and energy efficiency — for your home, studio, data center, and more.
Flash-based data storage that prioritizes speed, reliability, and energy efficiency — for your home, studio, data center, and more.
SSDs don’t rely on spinning disks or mechanical arms. Instead, they’re made up of flash memory cells, grouped together into flash memory chips, with a controller that orchestrates how data is written to and read from these chips.
SSDs (solid state drives) are more:
HDDs (hard drives) are still a good choice when cost per terabyte, overall capacity, and enterprise-grade data center workflows are priorities.
SSDs use non-volatile storage, meaning they keep information intact whether they’re on or off. By storing your data as electrical charges in flash NAND cells, SSDs keep your data safe — even during a power outage.
SSDs write data by applying electrical charges to flash memory cells. They use a process called ‘program/erase cycles’ (P/E cycles) to change the state of these cells and store the information.
SSDs read data by checking the electrical charge in each cell. They can directly access these cells, enabling them to fetch data rapidly compared to traditional HDDs.
When you’re managing content and need to delete a file, SSDs mark the corresponding cells as ‘invalid’. The actual erasure of data occurs later, which helps SSDs manage their storage space more efficiently.
SSDs are tough and durable because they don’t have any moving parts. But flash memory cells can only endure a limited number of P/E cycles before they wear out, which impacts the lifespan of the SSD.
Internal SSDs sit close to your CPU and use SATA or PCIe® connections to transfer data at high speeds. Try internal SSDs for:
External SSDs connect via Thunderbolt™ and/or USB to support high-performance workflows — all with AC power. Try external SSDs to:
Portable SSDs are compact, durable drives that use USB power, making them a great way to take your content on the go. Try portable SSDs for:
Disclosures
1. Speeds vary by product and capacity. 1MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
2. Applies only to WD_BLACK SN850P with Heatsink for PS5 Consoles and WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD.
3. 1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment and RAID configuration (if applicable).
4. Applies only to Ultrastar DC SN840 and Ultrastar DC SN655.
*Applies to select models only.
